It's a hitchhiker guide to the galaxy reference, where sure, something is technically available but not clearly published and there are hoops even for those who know what they're looking for.

(No clue if it's applicable here, I'm not aware of this case, but I believe that's the reference if it helps :)

Edit : exact quote, as Arthur's house is about to be demolished for a highway bypass:

"But the plans were on display…”

“On display? I eventually had to go down to the cellar to find them.”

“That’s the display department.”

“With a flashlight.”

“Ah, well, the lights had probably gone.”

“So had the stairs.”

“But look, you found the notice, didn’t you?”

“Yes,” said Arthur, “yes I did. It was on display in the bottom of a locked filing cabinet stuck in a disused lavatory with a sign on the door saying ‘Beware of the Leopard.

It's not at all applicable.

I was with you, but no, this is where you lost me:

"If folks are mad about actions that are legal, it makes zero sense to be mad at the actor."

There are people with mindset "I will try to be an overall decent human being and maintain some awareness and empathy of others", and there are the "I will be as much of a selfish asshole as the legal system allows me to, and wreak untold damage in the endless game of whack-a-mole".

I think in fact more of us should be gunning after the second kind :). To paraphrase you, It makes zero sense for me to be OK with fundamentally anti-social, anti-humanity humanoids.

I think you're both right, it depends a lot more on the specific situation. For example if Corporation A finds a loophole that allows them to dump toxic waste in the river, let's be pissed at both sides. If Corporation B reacts to incentives in the tax code to build an AI data center, you can be mad at data centers if you believe they poison the earth and waste resources, but you should also be mad at the government who created those incentives in the first place.

Consider also that in the US, corporations have an outsized influence on the law. In your example, Corporation B may not only be taking advantage of incentives in the tax code, but it may have had a hand in creating them as well.

I agree, and they're not incompatible:

1. By being upset at a behaviour, we can start the machine / process to amend the laws. The laws are not permanent, universal, absolute, or same as morality/utility. Noticing undesirable behaviour and raising a stink is how the laws get amended.

2. BUT/AND... laws will forever play a game of catchup, particularly in modern fast-paced technology environment. So I disagree with the "Tech exploiters are heroes, be mad at the law that allowed them to create torment nexus" - no, thank you. Let's in fact not worship emotionally-unintelligent semi-sociopathic assholes (pardon my language:) who misunderstood all the Scifi they read as kids - they crave that worship and praise, so let's withhold them please. Same goes for corporations - it's unbelievable how many people shrug their shoulders and go "well the purpose of corporation is to make profit above else" - corporation is not some universal external law, "a corporation" is a human construct and thus also malleable by humans and it's up to us to figure out what equilibrium is optimal :).

In relationships between people one interacts with directly, I agree: there are "social contracts" that aren't laws that people in the USA generally follow. Knowing about them and not following them makes someone a jerk.

Wreaking "untold damage" sounds like something where a law should exist to prevent it unless there's some incredibly important counter benefit.

Welcome to Hacker News with all the temporarily embarrassed millionaires

This is why I (actually/literally) just purchased a Commodore 64; I miss the days of crazy optimization and hardware hacking to fit so much into so little :).

Not supporting the idea, but this feels like the traditional technical details vs practical real world solution.

Rather than banning individuals right to access a site, and then playing technical whackamole, you make that company's ability to operate in a country illegal. this puts the incentives and the technical onus where it belongs.

Again not saying they should or I support the notion of banning a site. Just that there are practical legislative solutions.

(Not to be contrarian, but I rather thought usa has recently and repeatedly threatened to bomb and nuke countries into stone age... And in fact went significant way through that effort over last few months, to the tune of some $40bil or so, for no clear, consistent, rational, elucidated reason whatsoever. And of course, rather famously, is the only country that actually deployed nuclear weapons against other people).

I don't necessarily disagree with your underlying point mind you, but USA isn't what it used to be internationally, if it ever truly was. "Oklahoma / USA are peaceful, predictable. rational political entities" is a rather laughable point to try to make today :-/

I think of it is the level of regulation I'd require / desire in an endeavour.

On one side there's things with very little regulation required, private companies go crazy (and they will!:).

On the other hand, there's things I want high regulation on - use of violence (army / pokice / security), medicine, key infra utilities, alcohol/drugs/gambling, etc.

We can discuss whether we agree those things need regulation, and if so, what form that regulation takes.

(To me, some things I want so highly regulated there's no benefit in private ownership, just risk of runaway loop exploitation)

Or just entrepreneurs - people willing to take a risk to build something, and effort to promote / sell / hustle. They have always done well as a group, and now they are likely to shine even more.

(I am empathically not one of those so times are getting even more interesting for me :)

I think typically the term "Far" is meant to denote where it lies on political spectrum, and has fairly well understood typical brew of populist/authoritarian/nationalistic/xenophobic, with themes of strength, unity, and focus on "in" and "out" groups

It does not mean fringe or rare or low-in-numbers - unfortunately, "far right politics" have frequently been in the majority in our history and will certainly be again :-/

My experience is different ; Somehow I befriended a bunch of professional opera and orchestra singers in my mid 20s. It is now 20 years later and they absolutely all have side gigs.

We need to distinguish "professional opera singer" and "professional orchestra player" vs Pavarotti though :). Just like there are hundreds and thousands of "professional singers" and one Jennifer Lopez (though one could argue she's a perfect example of side gigs:).

My musician friends teach, do social networks, do all kinds of gigs, and are usually "multi barely employed". Not a single one of them, and two are fairly successful, are "full time employed" in the same sense a corporate professional is :-/.

I think it's a lot about which country you live in. I live in Norway, and went to a music oriented high school (I'm not terribly talented myself, but only half the places were set aside for people doing well on audition, the rest of us got in on grades). A good deal of my classmates became professional musicians of various sorts, two got orchestra jobs. But Norway isn't the best country to be a full time classical musician at all - apparently there are far more positions in Russia and Eastern European countries.

I believe it sends to various models in the background, So largely a harness / framework. Ibm does have its own model which is one of the options for Bob to use.

(Note, I'm an IBMer but nowhere near this so my comment is strictly from my public knowledge/awareness:).

so it routes to actual AI companies and IBM adds additional cost on top. what a business model.

and hides from you what models it's actually using

Never heard of Granite? https://huggingface.co/ibm-granite

(I'm also an IBMer.)

Yes, hence : >>"Ibm does have its own model which is one of the options for Bob to use." :)
