to play a record, i don't need a computer or any electronics created after, say, 1960 or so. that's a nice benefit :)

CD players came out in 80s, so one could say I don't need electronics made after the 80s to play those. Do those 20 years matter that much? I doubt it.

Better yet, you don't need any components in the supply chain that weren't well within the means of people 100 years ago. Vinyls and Edison cylinders will outlive every CD ever made.

That's a fun statement. I think we already had vacuum tubes and other foundational components that would in theory have allowed someone to build a CD player a 100 years ago or very close to that. If they would have had the knowledge.

For starters, CDs are not very dense, you can see the data with a microscope: http://www.pmonta.com/compact-disc-microscopy.html

In addition to the circuitry, I was also assuming that the laser would pose a difficulty.

It doesn't really require a coherent light source, although that does allow further miniaturization.

I think it would be fair to allow a hypothetical 1920s CD player to occupy most of a room. I'd be interested to see exactly how hard it would be to produce such a thing using the available technology of the era, though I'm still somewhat skeptical regarding the complexity and precision required of the laser motor (which unlike a vinyl needle needs to be controlled manually, rather than just following a groove mechanically) and the spindle motor (which needs to accelerate precisely depending on the laser's distance from the center, unlike a record which revolves at a constant rate).

> ... I wrote him what I felt was a conciliatory letter,1 though ending snarkily by quoting his own words, “The street finds its own use for things.”

autodesk had been public for 4 years by the time this happened. i don't think they get to claim that they were "the street" at that point :)

Still waiting on 64-bit BonziBuddy...

> The same reason why many great tech companies originate from Israel.

wait - what's the reason, though? i don't understand what you're trying to say.

> That's why Nvidia is the largest private employer in Israel. Why Apple's CTO is from Israel.

you cite two american companies with presence in Israel to defend your claim that "many great tech companies originate from Israel".

> is not about the companies and more about you and how you view Israel

your entire response is predicated on your view of Israel but you haven't explained what your view actually is or what it's based on.

i'll take one Bemale Nody Dinspector shirt, please.

> You could say that about pretty much any employee - and you'd be completely wrong. What makes you right in the case of CEOs and boards?

i love instant cameras but they aren't really used for professional photography except as a novelty or as a specific artistic choice, and sx-70 isn't a particularly stable medium.

Professionals aren't developing at home unless they have a darkroom, which were fully capable of doing color negatives in the 1970s. If you can shove color into a self-developing mobile consumer device, a professional can have it done.

Somehow this needs to be about poor constrained do-it-yourself professionals?

You can process and print B&W yourself. Color needs to go to a lab.
The consumer "street" photography of the time was mostly Polaroids, or little tiny box cameras you had developed at a booth.

This has all to do with a feel, and It could be that it was mostly shot in color and converted to B&W. Or, the wonderful dynamic range of B&W could be the reason. That's fine, but it has nothing to do with lack of choice.

> Nobody is actually orienting work and action to real, concrete goals. It's all based on speculation and anxiety about the future.

the simulation has become simulacra! cosmic horrors abound.

> These are overloaded terms at this point which is part of the reason so few actually comprehend.

this is perhaps the smallest of all possible reasons that "few actually comprehend" :) yes, the left is good at eating itself, but that self-destruction is not without a lot of external assistance!

the thought of having a phone, which i touch all day, set on many surfaces, put in my pockets etc having a fabric enclosure is so gross to me. did they just forget that people use their phones on the toilet? or while they eat messy food? that gold/tan model is bound to look like a busy parent of 4's minivan interior within a month.

I don't think it's actually fabric. It's a "fabric-like polymer coating".
