That he did so much great work in the past makes it all the more depressing that he has gone full-on slopper.

> I imagine they understand exactly what’s going on.

Maybe they are counting on taxpayers to bail them out if they crater in a 2008-scale failure.

That bailout was unpopular in 2008.

That was with a US government that was significantly less indebted than it is now, both in real terms and as a percentage of annual GDP. The crude birth rate is about 30% lower than it was in 2007. The generation that was coming of age at the time is the first in American history to have a lower quality of living than their parents.

IMHO, unless there is some massive geographic and societal divider that stands between the likes of Sam, Dario, et al. and the rest of the country at the time of any sort of collapse, they'd be far, far better off just taking the losses and not bothering American society again. It won't be pretty if they come asking for a handout.

I hate this way of thinking. The parents, at the same stage in life, didn’t have magical devices they could hold in their hands that would answer any question ever asked in human history, for example.

Progress matters. Just because the average 20 year old at that time could rent a 10% smaller apartment than their parents could, doesn’t mean they would necissarily trade what they have access to in 2007 for what their parents could access in the eighties.

People in 2007 are vastly better off than in 1984.

Job stability and housing affordability matter far more than fancy electronics.

I think life in the 80s was better. Less stress, less pressure and worry. The internet is nice but we had similar things back then like fidonet.

I mean there's nice things now too. Working from home is exceptionally nice. But a lot of it causes extra stress too. Like social media, polarisation, constant notification nagging. I turn most of that shit off but people still manage to pull me into that at times.

It does smell like AI. The one bit that gave me pause was "Thank you again, I do hope that this issue is resolved quickly." AIs don't usually do comma splices. Maybe it was AI with light human editing.

It could have been the other way around, with a human typing and something like Grammarly cleaning up the text.

So then you have a connection going one way (freezer to data-logging endpoint) and not the other.

The current state of "Hacker" News, where suggesting someone actually write code is seen as like suggesting that the injured walk to the hospital.

I can't believe I have to spell this out, but when people make an analogy, they're not saying that the things they are comparing are exactly the same. I'm saying that I paid for my Claude subscription, so it should do the development work I ask it to do.

Telling people that they can write code by hand is like telling them that they can walk when their car doesn't drive, regardless of where you drive to. It's technically correct, but it is completely irrelevant.

In a contest between the "supercharge my education and skill development" use and "let me be as lazy as possible" use of AI, it should be pretty obvious which will win out at the end of the day.

What a waste. All the anticipation that used to be built up with previews and looks into the dev process, now flushed down the toilet so billionaires can flood the web with crap and make more billions.

Other AIs, of course. AIs all the way down.

It has been going downhill for quite some time. The more recent flood of AI bots and now this change may be the last two nails in the coffin.

Award-winning writing has all kinds of different styles. The average of them will probably get you some boring median soup once again, though maybe a bit less bland than the LLMs trained on oceans of LinkedIn and Reddit slop.

Even if it doesn't, the effect of so much writing getting pushed out the door through default LLM settings is going to make it feel same-y and bland in short order.
