"Yankee" is derogatory or at best playful. "Usonians" isn't a word or in the form of a word.

"American" or "America" in this context is short for "United States of America" and has been used that way for generations, here and around the world. For the geographical term, use "North America," etc.; for the cultural, perhaps use "Anglo-America" or "Latin America."

Actually quite interesting that there is no good naming for people from the USA. Its just the patriotic BS that has spewed over there for decades that has lead to USA people believing they are the only Americans :)

What a total genius (:

Guess who live in the United Mexican States? You guessed it, Mexicans!

Guess who live in the United States of America? You guessed it - Americans (and a lot of others).

The "naming" is Americans.

Also despite there being one in every continent, you'd be amazed how many Parisians from France think they are the only ones who ought to use the name. Must be "patriotic BS that has spewed over there for decades"

After all, a deck of cards is The Devil's Picture Book[0][1].

There always was. Like there's a gym crowd, there's an intellectual-hobby crowd.

Not even close to being as popular as sports or a gym stuff. There's basically common knowledge - to be a good you need to hit a gym regularly. And it's going to be gym+something for a brain soon. At least i hope so

"A handgun in a house" is statistically extremely unlikely to be "used for murder/suicide."

It increases the incidences of both of those things happening compared to no gun.

The total number is relatively small, but so are deaths from measles. Should we not decrease them where we can?

Codex wrote you a website, or wrote you a pluggable CMS usable and configurable by non-coders?

Same thing on Twitter, I noticed last night. Making extraordinary, categorical claims too.

E.g. institutional prestige that inheres in arcane scientific knowledge in modern times, which in turn yields political and social clout.

"I can't practice minimum quality control as a web dev" doesn't sound like a problem with the standard.

When designing a standard like this you need to apply systems thinking.

The poor data quality is a problem for anyone who wants to use the tags, which has seen everyone almost universally reaching for other solutions. Search engines have preferred anchor tags, bookmarking solutions have applied user tagging.

With keyword tags it's been a vicious circle of poor data quality and neglect since day one. Even in documents from the early 1990s when people were really trying, the data quality is inconsistent at best.

Work is a good.

Why is involuntary work a good?

Nobody is talking about slavery here. You need to do something to feed yourself, otherwise you are making somebody else a slave to feed you. As a society there are some very disabled people we can accept this for, but when someone isn't supporting themselves that is enslaving someone else.

Not sure this reply makes much sense. I said that if we (humans) become more productive, i.e. that we can produce sufficient food/water/shelter/whatever with less effort, then the first goal after that should be to reduce the amount of drudgery the average person has to put up with, rather than (say) keeping the amount of drudgery the same and spaffing a bunch of fuel into space. I'm not sure where in that you see someone being enslaved to feed me.

Incidentally, we tolerate this kind of "slavery" just fine when we charge people rent for basic shelter. The cost of maintaining the asset (the house) is far less than the cost we actually charge people, so in your sense when I pay rent I am being enslaved by the landlord to support their lifestyle.

Finally, you brought up slavery. The guy I'm replying to just said "work is good". I don't think it's good that we make people destroy their bodies in amazon fulfilment centers. People know what's good for them, if they want to do work let them do the work they want. But to say "no, you have to do the work I want you to do" under the hypothesis that we have plenty of stuff to go around (and we absolutely do) is just sick.

It's not much of a stretch to see this as certain powers punishing Facebook for not having actively suppressed the Trump campaign.

It wouldn't be a stretch but only it the rest of the investigation didn't happen and we knew absolutely nothing else about Cambridge Analytica or Facebook. As that is not the reality we live in, you could read more about the case or not let you biases show so clearly.
