They are correctly using position. The dead reckoning a phone does over its accelerometers absolutely yields a position. It would of course drift quickly, but it would know its position relative to where it was was a while ago.
It's basically what VR headsets and controllers do, sans their periodic error correction from cameras or lighthouses.

Accelerometers yes, gyroscopes no. The video covers accelerometers later but hasn't introduced them yet, and the "your phone knows its position" line has a visual of an IC labelled "MEMS gryoscope".
I see what you're saying about the tabloid. You're right, but there are other issues.
On the surface the confusion it creates for normal citizens who just want to be a little healthier is bad enough.
Yeah, the cabbage I've been eating is less nutritious than spinach or kale. And even the individual foods may have fewer nutrients because of bioengineering or monocrops or agribusiness economics or whatever.
But I'm guessing in five years, the FDA will still be recommending people eat more veggies and reduce portions.
No, the reason media portrayals of research like this are really bad is because it pollutes our shared infospace making independent research more difficult.
It might seem like The Independent wins here and the US loses because of the spread of misinformation, but it's deeper than that. This post gets picked up and incorporated into LLM training data sets and search engines. It begins to modify weights on models that people who don't have time to research in-depth use to make their life easier.
Which in the end gives more power to the FDA and other government agencies. I want the FDA to have power to educate us. But it gives federal institutions power to not only publish information that is truly helpful to citizens, but to turn those recommendations into more authoritarian policies.
This is like watching another measles outbreak in real-time. But a couple decades too late.
Instead we could have spent today educating people on information literacy and how to critically read information sources. But why do that when you can kill Teo birds with one stone?
There are groups that honestly would rather have more authoritarian systems in place instead of years of careful education. If you can blame citizens or other countries for health care outcomes, it makes it a little easier, doesn't it?
There's a cruelty there in a population management style that I really don't think is realized yet. It's tough to gulp down when you see it and not a joke.
I don't think appealing to how good a country is at breeding is a valid counter to its genocidal tendencies. That's probably the strangest argument I've ever seen.
Well we’ve already established that the use of the term genocide is nonsense, I’m arguing something different. In this case that the type of defective thinking displayed in the idea you need to be a member of some institution to apply your intellect is in part responsible for the fact every other developed society is dying, it has to do with agency and libido (the psychological sense of the term).
50k civilians dead out of a population of 2.2M. The population of Gaza has increased since the war began. That’s not a genocide insofar as the word means anything.
If it was a genocide you would expect basically 90% of the population of Gaza to be dead. Israel controls the water supply and the food into Gaza, they could just poison the food and water, dropping bombs isn’t even necessary.
I don’t know how to make it more simple than that.
General Magic failed with all the talent and all the resources. Cautionary Tales podcast featured General Magic in a recent episode; the basic argument was no constraints led to no focus.
You don't need a counter example to a counter example.
It's not that I think the opposite of the original statement is true, I'm suggesting that's it's just all noise as there are both successes and failures at both extremes.
