To a shocking degree sometimes. I had a good friend in high school who was from Hong Kong, born to a pretty rich couple who recently moved to the UK ahead of the handover. I guess the move was stressful because his father's culturally and socially acceptable gambling habit took a real turn and his family lost about 2/3rds of everything before the mother figured out what was happening and stepped in. Certainly on his own he was on the road to driving his family into true penury.
