America is being run by somebody who doesn't understand the value of science, so it is seen as a waste of money and worse, systematically destroyed. The problem is that the result won't become apparent for about ten years at which point Americans will be asking why everyone else is making money from science and technology breakthroughs and they're getting poorer.
