yep this stuff is super interesting. we're seeing rust rewrites of games like modern warfare 2 [1][2], and mashups with cod, minecraft, and skate 3 [3][4][5]. there is a large active discord community of gamers and modders sharing tips and guides on how to do this. none of them are really programmers, they're just sharing prompts and codex/claude code does the rest. i don't think llm's are capable of designing new games but they're wizards at reverse-engineering and mashing up existing games, which kind of makes sense for a computer.
For context, this is a $65-$80 synthesizer that's been pretty popular for its cheap price tag, and there have been a bunch of third party firmwares being released to make it even more friendly and feature-packed than it already is out of the box. There's quite a bit of discussion in the subreddit:
99.99% of people are not investing a lump sum on one date and liquidating it all on another date. Extend this graph to today, and it will be much greener.
I saw someone who claims to have re-implemented Photoshop in Rust using clean room specs. I haven't checked into it yet, but it seems to have a lot of interest.
‘Acoustic bike means a bike without an electric assist. So, a "normal" bike. I know the Path Less Pedaled youtube channel has used this term for at least a couple of years, though I don't think that's necessarily the originator. It's a play on electric/acoustic guitars.’
For what it's worth, the Prequel Memes subreddit has a similar take [1] on the issue:
> New rule, no algo-speak or self-censoring. This isn't tik tok and the target audience here does not have a median age of 11. You can say murder on the subreddit about the movies where little kids are slaughtered.
seeing what has been happening in the game modding communitiy, with people reverse engineering full rust rewrites of games like modern warfare 2 [1][2], or reverse engineering mashups with cod, minecraft, and skate 3 [3][4][5], the only defence against reverse-engineering literally all software will be to serve it from the cloud, and even that will not be enough. these people aren't even programmers, claude code just downloads ghidra and builds this stuff.
the future of software is oss. unless governments lock down access to these tools to prevent this kind of reverse engineering. which is a horrible future to envision.
The original announcement was vague[0]. Most assumed that Motorola will be releasing a GOS phone[1], but as more information became available it seems that Motorola will release a GOS-compatible phone. At least to start. Both sides are not commenting on if a phone would eventually ship with GOS from the factory AFAIK. But I'm guessing neither wants to commit to anything right now.
T-Mobile recently had a trade-in promotion where you could trade in any phone and get a pixel 10 for "free". The free is in quotes because what actually happens is you get signed up for device financing which spreads the cost of the phone over 2 years, and then they give your account a credit each month for the same amount charged by the device financing. So they'll end up charging you $33 per month and crediting you $33 per month, resulting in the phone actually being free. The catch is it locks you into 2 years on T-Mobile because if you cancel the account or pay off the phone early, you forfeit all the remaining credits.
Since it was free and I had no plans on leaving T-Mobile in the following 2 years, I went ahead and did the trade-in with an old Pixel 3a. What I didn't realize is since the phone is on a payment plan, the phone is not only carrier-locked (which would be fine) but also bootloader-locked until the end of those 2 years, so I cannot install GrapheneOS on it until ~2028. My free pixel 10 is sitting in its box gathering dust until 2028.
Haidt is a fearmonger playing upon the currents of the moment to sell fear. That's always been his schtick. He's a conservative, founding projects like the Heterodox Academcy to force "viewpoint diversity" on campuses even when it contracts the facts, and that's basically how he writes his work. He's had numerous researchers say he's mis-representing the work, has generally been a man of kevlar letting actual facts just bounce off him. Deeply unserious man, with a vicious agenda that taps deeply into the abundant uncertainty about to sell and drive fear deep. Regardless of facts.
I'd be willing to hear a story like what we have here, but from anyone but an unserious agenda-filled buffoon like Haidth. The man is a con, and a joke. This submission should be neutron bombed from orbit, to be safe, to keep any Haidt from rubbing off on anyone.
Regarding Reddit, there is a lining of truth behind his claim (despite possibly being a troll based on account age). Someone years ago made a well written post about it on reddit (yes I know, kind of ironic)
Things have certainly changed since the introduction of AI, but I still believe the status quo is mostly the same regarding people who create content or write content and people who passively consume it.
Haskell packages in arch are dynamically, rather than statically, linked, which pulls in a large amount of transitive dependencies (reportedly in the neighborhood of a gigabyte). The maintainer has a pretty reasonable (to my eyes) explanation[1] as to why this is the case, but admittedly if I were an arch user I'd probably find it a bit annoying.
I ran my own small-business/family mail server for a little over a decade. Spam is out of control.
UCEPROTECT and other RBLs are just lists of text files. They do not block anything. As the mail administrator, you can choose what you do with a UCEPROTECT listing.
When I ran my mail server, I had UCEPROTECT tied into SpamAssassin, so that a UCEPROTECT listing by itself wouldn't block email; it would just raise the "spam probability rating" up.
UCEPROTECT is not a huge professional thing; it's "some guy" who's been running it, effectively, for free since the very early 2000s. No one is obligated to use it. If someone is being blocked by it, they need to contact the mail admin. UCEPROTECT just lists problematic hosts.
On to WHY DO and no CF/AWS? I don't know.. I'm not the "some guy" running the thing. But if I had to guess, it's that DO doesn't respond to spam complaints[1]. Whereas CF/AWS, while they host spammers, will take action against reported spammers.
2. Even when you do import a full album, it often struggles to match tracks. Here's part of a transcript I saved:

Picard has worked flawlessly for me so far, it's just a shame it can't be automated.
In related news, 2 companies have begun human trials on genetic therapy for the most common cause of hearing loss (GJB2). I'm sure cochlear implant companies are a bit nervous about this development!
firstly, great post and you're spot on. On the art side, it was already that way before AI art, just that the smallest of customers didn't know how to access it.
Coding is just as much like woodworking as art and design are. The core of the matter is intent, or what people call intentionality in the architecture.
What I tell clients is: You want your code to be consistent and maintanable, so someone fully understands the edge cases. Or you want the design to be consistent across the company. You could easily hire someone to do one art piece that was 90% on point, and then haphazardly hire someone else to do one that was 90% okay based on that... and very quickly the overall structure will decohere.
So, I'm not talking about someone selling socks on Etsy, but if you've already invested a few million in branding and/or code architecture, that is an asset you own and control. Do you really want to inject potential AI slop into that in a process that's going to degrade it further in each subsequent step, just to save a few bucks?
I also like how people are becoming more aware of the difference... this thread is enlightening[0]... but I believe that what a few people are conscious of, 90% of people are subconsciously aware of, and knowing how to manipulate subconscious associations with imagery has always been the true art and magic of graphic design. Design in particular is widely misunderstood, even by people who call themselves designers. It has almost nothing to do with making something look subjectively decent (the bare minimum), and everything to do with knowing more references than your audience knows they know. So when AI becomes a recognizable visual trope, we've won.
>> it's going to be a tough market for artisans because fewer and fewer people are forced to buy the fruits of your intellectual labor.
Once everyone has a WordPress site, who needs a web designer? It turns out a lot of people. And I've begun getting random queries from people who have vibe-coded apps asking me to "fix" them. When everyone has a bike, people dream of owning a car. When everyone has a car, people dream of owning a plane. What makes them tick isn't the velocity, it's the cachet.
I remember a research paper about swap and GC, where the GC cooperated with the OS to avoid this kind of issue. AFAIK it went nowhere, too bad.

Are you talking about this one? https://cse.buffalo.edu/\~mhertz/bc-pldi-2005.pdf. If so, yes. Too bad. I don't know the repercusions this paper had in the past, though, in the sense of pros and cons of the bookmark collector. Don't know if anyone tried to actually implement it or design it at some point.
