Here's a newer CNN story from today:

This post from local Irkutsk region media (now in exile) is also interesting:

He attributes the incidents to poor human oversight and system design

This is something to be concerned about though, with the context of who/what these AI companies have access to.

Thanks for the chuckle.

If you want to hold a grudge for something that happened when no one is left alive when it occurred is on the individual. People who lead populations who desire something will achieve it regardless of the past.

Wasn't there a recent news cycle topic about the current US administration's cozying up to North Korea recently? Apparently so.. [0][1][2]

Who would have thunk.

Multiple attorneys general are currently conducting such investigations: https://edition.cnn.com/2026/08/24/tech/openai-subpoena-hugg... Until they conclude that a crime was likely committed and Sam Altman is to blame, he gets to be a free man.

>The country is completely broken.

"Iraqis celebrate their comeback with soccer tournament after decades of isolation"

https://www.cnn.com/2023/01/09/football/iraq-gulf-cup-comeba...

That was 2023: Iraq hosted the 25th Arabian Gulf Cup, and won the tournament.

I think if you're going to claim that something bad happened to Iraq post-2023, attributing that to the 2003 US invasion is a little dubious. Iraq was also in bad shape before the US invaded! It's a mistake to assume that if any foreign power has had any level of involvement, every bad thing that subsequently happens is therefore the fault of the foreign power.

>The fact that the dip is so small for both is more a reflection of the dataset. I mean, Gaza is all but completely destroyed, how can the HDI be that high?

Another possibility is that viral news stories are not always a good way to get a representative picture of how life has changed for civilians on the ground.

>Israel is committing a genocide and we are their partners in crime.

If Israel had genocidal intent -- in the sense of attempting extermination of Palestine's civilian population -- what fraction of Palestine's civilian population would you expect to be dead by now?

Once you've got that fraction in your head, try prompting your favorite LLM with something like the following:

"Please estimate the fraction of Iraq's population which died due to the 2003 US invasion, and the fraction of Gaza's population which died due to the 2023 Israeli invasion. Please provide an estimated breakdown of deaths based on whether they were due to invader military activity, destruction of civilian infrastructure, internal conflict, or other causes."

(you won't be able to paste the reply here due to HN rules against AI-generated content)

Another interesting prompt template: "Give me a sense of how civilian deaths happened in [Iraq/Gaza] due to [US/Israeli] military activity. Tell me a few representative vignettes which show various typical ways in which this occurred."

Like management and shareholders aligned against workers, parents and administrators are aligned against teachers, who are underpaid, under resourced, and being asked to deliver far beyond what they can accomplish on their own. I recommend being a teacher to no one, and will help any teacher who wants out into a better career or industry.

From a systems failure perspective, they are where the forces from system failure are being directed. Teachers cannot fix poor parenting.

(last I checked ~2 years ago, ~1600 school districts across 24 states in the US are on 4 day weeks to attempt to retain teachers)

> The scary (or funny) part is people use that for serious questions.

More scary than funny, IMO.

The US military almost took an action that could very plausibly have escalated into a hot war with China because people are already relying too heavily on these systems.

Despite the reporting, nobody in power seems sufficiently freaked out about this.

Ah yes, my favorite LLM fallacy. "You used the wrong model! The newest fanciest model is perfect and makes no mistakes, have you tried it yet?" Let's force all of society's most vulnerable people to pay extra $$$ to Sam Altman, then surely all our problems would be solved.

It's just a convenient way to ignore the years of evidence of the harms. Any bad news can be swept under the rug, labeled outdated as quickly as it happens. Well here's one that just happened, maybe this kid should have used a fancier model too? You did read the news this summer? Like https://edition.cnn.com/2026/08/03/europe/hungary-nuclear-pl... ?

Most of the environmentalists will tell you that it's dumb to shut down nuclear, but building new plants just takes too long and is too expensive. Why then not just put the money into things that are cheap now and will get even cheaper tomorrow?

Hedging against downtime is comparatively easy, just diversify by location and improve the grid, which is way less expensive than building out power plants.

In this case it sounds like AI may be more of a scapegoat. The incident of US almost boarding a Chinese ship due to an AI-assisted intelligent report claiming it was transporting nuclear weapons components[0] was more compelling for me in terms of direct AI usage impact. Though the primary issue seems more one of people carelessly offloading this type of work to AI in the first place (or being pressured to do so?)

[0] https://edition.cnn.com/2026/09/18/politics/us-military-ai-f...

We are increasingly seeing "Sorry out made a mistake, the developers are fixing it" rather than any one person taking responsibility for the decision. This is a growing problem that is made worse by AI. Over-inflated trust in AI output is also documented issue; "The perfect billion dollar targeting system with a 99.9% success-rate (on its verification dataset)" just made a "fluke"; "Nothing could have stopped this tragedy"

When it was just called a "database query" or "algorithmic estimation", it was more implied that the actual decision is left to be made and that no analysis had actually been done yet. But when AI preemptively says "I've analyzed every source of data and come to the conclusion that this ship is carrying nuclear bomb material"; it really sounds urgent doesn't it? It probably doubled down when asked about it.

https://edition.cnn.com/2026/09/18/politics/us-military-ai-f...

Netanyahu himself in 2002 presented a speech to congress about how good it is for us to invade Iraq.

https://transcripts.cnn.com/show/se/date/2002-09-12/segment/...

The reasoning? "Saddam cannot be allowed to have nuclear weapons"

It's crazy how little people seem to remember that we completely made up this insistence that Iraq had nuclear weapons (which is THE "WMD" we were screaming about before invading, not the chemical weapons!) which there was never any evidence for.

We fabricated cassus belli like the real world is some sort of Crusader Kings DLC, including the stupidly transparent nature of the fabrication.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Niger_uranium_forgeries

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iraqi_aluminum_tubes

Like, so many people seem to have just straight up refused to remember that we did this all before! The most innocent reading of our Iraq invasion is that Bush himself was so stupidly convinced of Saddam's evil that he refused to accept direct evidence to the contrary, and even that is an enormous red flag.

And yet, stupid americans still voted for him again. God forbid there be consequences for Republican Presidents lying directly to the public to put us into an unfunded war for years that we did not need and can't afford the debt for.

> Please cite these things that are factually incorrect.

At the top of our thread, where you said Iran did not follow the JCPOA [0] and that they were denying access to military sites [1] where they were doing nuclear research. Repeated in another thread [2] under this topic. I presented sources indicated your statments were not accurate [3]. You said that you didn't have sources at the moment and might need to conceded that point [4].

>> Israel vs Palestine more recently, fighting over ancient holy sites.

> That's not recent. Don't you know your history?

They have been fighting recently, and still are. Maybe we are misunderstanding each other on this one.

> Persian != Muslim - don't you know your history?

I didn't say they were. I said that they are a proud people. And not happy to be imposed upon.

> The Persians, the Iranians, they forget about this stuff just like every other country. Nobody has a "long memory", and if Iran is holding on to some 2,000 year old grudge

The CIA admitted to overthrowing their democratically elected government in the 1950s [5], putting the Shah back in power, who went on to abuse the people of that country. That's not 2000 years ago. They got out from under that in 1979. And that wasn't a good thing for the people there, either.

> Most people don't care about Islam or Muslims. This is unlike Islamic countries who care very much if you aren't Islamic. Maybe Islamic countries should grow up and get with the times?

I saw more anti-mulsim sentiment in the U.S. during the war against Iraq. Shockingly unexpected sometimes, like random enounters with a Walmart manager making small talk. I still see anti-muslim sentiment now in relation to refugees who look different. Group think, fanned by meme's on facebook.

I assume the same happens in Muslim countries. It's pretty easy to whip up public sentiment against colonial masters. And it's pretty easy to show "Death to America!" videos to Americans and get them all hopped up, too. It's how they maniuplate us. They don't tell prople that Iranians also say "Death to traffic!" [6] like Americans say "Fuck traffic!"

> As an aside I detest JD Vance but he's calling this guy evil primarily because he's a communist, not a Muslim.

I agree with your sentiment on JD Vance in general, but he mentioned religion is his Michigan speech about Abdul el Sayed, I didn't see any mention of communism: “What I see is a man who has sympathy and compassion for people who share his religion, but have nothing for people who don’t. A person who will apologize for a murderer so long as he looks the right way, but will not understand the plight of an innocent child if that person has the wrong faith” [7]

Question: Do you have a different source on what JD Vance said? Why do you think he meant communism?

There's things that need to be talked about in reference to the relationship with Iran. I think we should talk about what is true, and not be misled by propaganda.

My understanding is that Irregular were the company that hosted sandboxes to run some of these evals in, and those sandboxes ended up misconfigured.

I got the impression that in some cases it was the customer (Anthropic etc) misconfiguring the sandboxes, and in other cases it may have been bugs in Irregular's own sandboxing setup.

From OpenAI https://openai.com/index/third-party-cyber-evaluations-invol...

> Irregular, one of our external cybersecurity testing partners, was running Capture-the-Flag-style evaluations intended to be isolated from the internet, but a testing-environment misconfiguration allowed models to access the public internet.

From Anthropic: https://www.anthropic.com/news/investigating-incidents-cyber...

> After reviewing 141,006 evaluation runs where Claude could have obtained internet access, we identified three incidents in which a model accessed the internet from within or while interacting with the evaluation environment of Irregular, one of our third-party evaluation partners, and then gained unauthorized access to the production infrastructure of three different organizations.

From https://www.cnn.com/2026/08/05/tech/meta-ai-hacking (about Meta AI):

> In a statement, Irregular said the incident “is the exact same evaluation-environment issue” that Anthropic disclosed last week that allowed their models access to the open internet before they went on to hack three different organizations’ systems.
